US defense Secretary Ash Carter is visiting Afghanistan without having announced it beforehand, in order to consult with military commanders and deliver a pre-holiday talk to US troops. This is his last trip to the country before handing off his responsibilities to his successor.

Carter is also scheduled to meet with Afghan President Ashraf Ghani later during the day.
