TVN News & Services Agency

New feature film “Volyn” by the director Wojciech Smarzowski will have its official premiere on Tuesday in Warsaw. The movie is about the massacre of tens of thousands of Polish residents committed by Ukrainian nationalists during the World War Two. The movie raised controversy from the beggining. Representatives of the Ukrainian community in Poland warn that the film may have a destabilizing factor for Ukrainian-Polish relations.

Volyn masacre was an ethnic cleansing operation carried out in Nazi German-occupied territory of Poland (today Western Ukraine) by the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA). In 2008 it was described by Poland's Institute of National Remembrance as bearing the distinct characteristics of a genocide. At the same time UPA and the leader of its extreme fraction Stepan Bandera are consideres as national heroes by some Ukrainians. The question of official acknowledgment of the ethnic cleansing remains a matter of a discussion between Polish and Ukrainian historians and political leaders

Director Wojciech Smarzowski is one of the best modern Polish directors, and is known from his naturalistic style.
