Turkey has launched a military offensive in Northern Syria against IS and Kurdish forces as part of their "Euphrates Shield" operation. Military personel and vehicles such as tanks and jets have gathered near the Turkey-Syria border in an attempt to assist Syrian rebels regain control of the Syrian town of Jarablus and preemptively prevent Kurdish forces from capturing the region. There have been multiple exchanges of gunfire and shelling throughout the past week in increasingly violet clashes.

The decision was described by Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu as an attept to "completely cleanse" the area of IS troops.

In Geneva, United States Secretary of State John Kerry met with Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov for talks of a possible ceasefire but have yet to reach a deal. John Kerry reiterated that US had limited support for Kurdish fighters and stated "We are for a united Syria. We do not support an independent Kurd initiative."
