Funerals for victims of the magnitude 6.2 earthquake hit central Italy last week, leaving at least 290 people dead

The funerals of earthquake victims of Amatrice will be held in the town at 16:00 gmt Tuesday, the Mayor of the town, Sergio Pirozzi said.

Plans to hold the memorial service some 65 kilometers away at an airport in the provincial capital, Rieti were scrapped after angry protests from survivors.
Amatrice, a medieval town in the Apennine mountains, was one of the worst-hit of the villages and towns devastated by a 6.2-magnitude quake on August 24 which killed 290 people, with 230 from Amatrice. It is "right" to hold funerals for the earthquake victims of Amatrice in Amatrice rather than in the provincial capital of Rieti where they had been briefly moved before a citizens' protest, Premier Matteo Renzi said on Twitter. "The funerals of the victims of the #earthquake will be held in Amatrice as the mayor and the local community have asked. And That is right!" Renzi tweeted.
