ROME, ITALY
04 SEPTEMBER 2016

Pope Francis will lead Holy Mass and Canonization of Mother Teresa in Saint Peter’s square in the Vatican on September, 4 2016, declaring Blessed Teresa of Kolkata a Saint on the the eve of the 19th anniversary of her death in 1997.

Mother Teresa was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 for dedicating her life to helping the poor. Known as the ‘’saint of the gutters,’’ she tended to the sick and the dying in the slums of Kolkata (formerly Calcutta) and some of the poorest neighbourhoods in the world. Born Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu on August 26, 1910 to an ethnic Albanian family in Skopje (now part of Macedonia), Mother Teresa went to India in the late 1920s with the Sisters of Loreto and founded the Missionaries of Charity in 1950. The order now provides care for the needy through hundreds of orphanages, homeless shelters and clinics around the world.
Just two years after she died, St. John Paul II put Mother Teresa on the fast track for possible sainthood by allowing the beatification process to begin, dispensing with the usual five-year waiting period. Mother Teresa was beatified in 2003. The Canonisation date marks the conclusion of the Holy Year of Mercy for pilgrims engaged in works of mercy.
