11TH- 13TH FEBRUARY, 2016

The Vatican has just announced a historic meeting to be held in Havana, Cuba on February 12th between Pope Francis and Patriarch Krill, the head of the Russian Orthodox church. This will be the first time a sitting head of the Catholic Church will meet with the head of the Russian Orthodox Church after a nearly 1,000 year divide. The meeting will be held at José Martí International Airport in Havana, where the two will sign a joint declaration. Pope Francis will then travel on to Mexico for a six-day tour of the country.

Pope Francis and Russian Orthodox patriarch to hold historic meeting

Pope Francis will travel to Cuba later this month to meet Patriarch Kirill of the Russian Orthodox church, the first such encounter of its kind in history, the Vatican has announced. The pope will arrive in Havana on 12 February and be greeted by Cuba’s president, Raul Castro, before holding a private meeting with Kirill. It will be the first time a pope has met a Russian patriarch and shows a significant warming of relations between the two churches since they split almost 1,000 years ago.

Pope Francis and the leader of the Russian Orthodox Church will meet in Cuba on Friday, in a historic step to heal the 1,000-year-old schism that divided Christianity between East and West, both churches announced Friday.

The meeting between Francis and Patriarch Kirill will be the first ever between the leaders of the Catholic and Russian Orthodox churches.

Francis is due to travel to Mexico Feb. 12-18. He will stop in Cuba on the way and meet with Kirill on Feb. 12 at the Havana airport, where they will sign a joint declaration, a joint statement said.


The Associated Press will provide broadcast facilities from the following locations:

The stand-up position will be outdoors, facing the tarmac and part of the terminal. Details regarding credentials and times of operation will be advised as soon as the local authorities confirmed logistical details.

AP HAVANA BUREAU
Additional broadcast facilities are available at the permanent AP bureau in Havana.

POPE IN MEXICO
AP will also be operational in Mexico providing broadcast facilities through out the country.
