Iranians will go to the polls on 26 February 2016 to vote in both the Parliamentary elections and the elections for the Assembly of Experts. The outcome of the Parliamentary elections will affect President Rouhani’s ability to carry out his political agenda but the vote for the 86 member Assembly of Experts could potentially be of far greater long term importance to Iran’s future direction. The Assembly is charged with choosing the next supreme leader in the event of the current leader Ayatollah Khamenei’s death.
Apart from President Rouhani who is running for re-confirmation to the Assembly, several moderates are running, most notably, the former president of Iran Ayatollah Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani and Hassan Khomeini, the grandson of the ayatollah who founded the Islamic Republic.

Iran holds parliamentary elections on 26 February that will be seen as a vote on President Hassan Rouhani's moderate policies following a landmark nuclear deal with world powers.
Thousands of candidates are reported to have begun campaigning for a place in the country's 290-seat parliament. Reformist moderates have formed an alliance, hoping to challenge conservative lawmakers who currently hold a majority.
