15.09.2015Belgium: Migrant crisis: Extraordinary EU Justice and Home Affairs Council *** ARCHIVE

Eurovision News Events

Brussels, Belgium, 14 September, 2015

EU interior and justice ministers will meet in Brussels on 14 September to find concrete measures to cope with the Europe’s escalating migration crisis.

Unprecedented numbers of migrants are reaching EU borders, surpassing 100,000 in July alone. EU member states disagree about how to tackle the problem. France’s Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius slammed Hungary’s “migrant wire fence”. UK Home secretary Theresa May said countries across Europe were realizing that the Schengen agreement – which created Europe’s borderless area – had exacerbated the crisis, and said there is a need for a renegotiation of the terms of Britain’s EU membership.

The discovery of a truck that carried 71 migrants to their deaths last week shocked the whole of Europe. It highlighted the proliferation of highly organized smuggling operations responding to the wave of migrants from the Middle East and North Africa. This morning the queue of vehicles stretched some 20 kilometers back into Hungary, after Austria toughened controls at its eastern borders in an attempt to clamp down on trafficking of migrants.
