Alexis Tsipras and his left-wing Syriza party secured a clear victory in Sunday's poll as voters put aside his dramatic U-turn over Greece's bailout to offer him a second chance.
Syriza has won just over 35%, which is short of a majority. The party said on Sunday it plans to govern in a coalition with the nationalist Independent Greeks party, the same partner Tsipras chose after winning the country's previous general election in January. Tsipras will seek a broader consenus among the parties he defeated to strengthen his hand in talks with EU partners over Greece’s debt, which will remain the most important battle, according to party sources.
