06.08.2015United States: First Republican presidential debate *** ARCHIVE

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS I AP 360

The first Republican presidential debate is scheduled for August 6th in Cleveland, Ohio.

Currently there are 17 candidates seeking the Republican presidential nomination, but only the top 10 candidates in an average of national polls will make it to the first debate.

The White House hopefuls are trying everything they can to improve their polling position; Rick Perry is attacking Donald Trump's credibility and branding the billionaire businessman "a cancer on conservatism." Rick Santorum, a conservative stalwart, popped up on a TV program popular with liberals. Lindsey Graham set his cellphone on fire.

Those kept out risk being overlooked by voters and financial backers heading into the critical fall stretch before the nominating contests start early in 2016.

Depending on affiliate interest, The Associated Press will provide broadcast facilities in Cleveland, Ohio. Please contact AP Washington and advise us your coverage plans.
