Lisbon, Portugal, 04-05 October 2015

The Portuguese legislative election will be held on 4 October 2015.

As Portugal continues to face difficult economic times after exiting a bailout last year, Portuguese President Aníbal Cavaco Silva announced that his country’s general election will take place on October. At stake will be all 230 seats that make up Portugal’s Assembly of the Republic.

The ruling Centre-right coalition of the Social Democratic Party and the Democratic and Social Centre-People's Party will seek re-election to a second term in office.

Centre-right Prime Minister Pedro Passos Coelho, who has been in office since 2011, will seek a second four-year mandate.

In 2011, Portugal's economy was on the brink of collapse. It became the third Eurozone country after Ireland and Greece to be bailed out.

Portugal left the bailout scheme in May 2014 but only after implementing strict austerity measures in return for funding.
