France will celebrate its National Day. Bastille Day commemorates the storming of the Bastille prison in 1789 by a mob of Parisians during the opening stages of the French Revolution. The prison had become a symbol of Bourbon tyranny and its fall reinforced revolutionary zeal. The anniversary became a national day in 1880 and is marked by parades, speeches, parties and fireworks. The major public event to mark Bastille Day is the military parade down the Champs Elysees in Paris. It is seen as a day of patriotic and military display, with dramatic flypasts and the president making his annual televised address at noon. The day ends with a fireworks spectacular. Most offices and businesses close for the day.
