Eurovision News Events

Geneva, Switzerland, 18-26 May 2016

THE sixty-eighth session of the World Health Assembly (WHA) begins today in Geneva, Switzerland, with discussions on ‘Ebola: Ending the current outbreak, strengthening global preparedness and ensuring the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) capacity to prepare for and respond to future large-scale outbreaks and emergencies with health consequences,’ and ‘Health in post-2015 development agenda’ top on the agenda.

German chancellor Angela Merkel will speak at the opening on the need for WHO reform to ensure there is prompt response to health emergencies that can impact on the entire world. There are two urgent issues that must be addressed in the interest of all nations, she believes – the response to the event of a pandemic and the fading powers of antibiotic drugs because of global overuse. She intends to push forward on both issues at the G7, which Germany chairs, this summer in early June.

The WHA takes place from 18–26 May 2015, when officials from 194 Member States begin their annual review of the activities of WHO and set new priorities for the future.
