Eurovision News Events

Dublin, Ireland, 22-23 May 2015

Voters in Ireland will participate in a referendum on gay marriage on the 22nd of May.

The Irish people are being asked to add to the constitution that "marriage may be contracted in accordance with law by two persons without distinction as to their sex."

Same-sex couples already enjoy rights similar but not equal to those currently permitted in civil marriage. A yes vote will legalise same-sex marriage by approving a constitutional amendment.

The Government, all major political parties and about 76% of voters are reported to support a yes vote.

This week, in the world's first national referendum on the matter, the Irish could vote to legalize same-sex marriage. Gay marriage is legal in 19 countries, but - with the exception of three U.S. states - the measure has been enacted solely by lawmakers, not in referendums. Voting takes place in Ireland on Friday 22 May, with a declaration expected on Saturday 23 May from the national count co-ordination centre at Dublin Castle.
