Eurovision News Events

Simferopol, Crimea, 15-17 March 2015

A number of solemn events in the center of the Crimean capital of Simferopol will mark the first anniversary of the controversial referendum on the peninsula's status that was held on March 16, 2014, and of what Russia calls "the historical reunification of Crimea" - and others refer to as annexation - one day later.

The referendum gave Crimeans a choice between joining Russia as a federal subject, or restoring the 1992 Crimean constitution and Crimea's status as part of Ukraine. The official outcome was a 96,77 percent vote for integration into the Russian Federation.

Although the referendum was recognized only by a handful of countries including Russia, Armenia and Kazakhstan, Russia used it as a justification to "re-unite" - or annex, as most other countries see it - the peninsula on 17 March 2015.
