19.03.2015Switzerland: Iran Nuclear Talks *** ARCHIVE

Eurovision News Events

Lausanne, Switzerland US Secretary of State John Kerry and Iranian counterpart Mohammad Jawad Zarif have begun a critical week of nuclear talks in Lausanne, Switzerland, in an effort to seek a break-through after 18 months of intense negotiations. Aides to John Kerry said that many obstacles still remained before a late March deadline for an outline accord between Iran and six world powers. Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, said in a speech in the U.S. Congress that Washington was negotiating a bad deal with Iran that could spark a "nuclear nightmare," drawing a rebuke from President Obama and exposing a deepening U.S.-Israeli rift. The other P5+1 powers, Russia, China, France, Britain and Germany, would all have to sign off on any deal. While they have been supportive of a formal commitment by Iran, they have also insisted that empirical constraints on the limitations to Iranian uranium enrichment capacity should be detailed, as should a timetable for the annulation of sanctions on Iran. Tehran continues to strongly deny that it is seeking to build nuclear-weapons, while maintaining the right to protect its civil nuclear energy program.
