On May 10th, the President Bronislaw Komorowski unexpectedly lost the first round of the Poland's presidential election to a previously unknown Law and Justice member Andrzej Duda.

The final results reveal that Andrzej Duda won 34.76 percent of Sunday’s vote, while incumbent president Bronisław Komorowski gathered 33.77 percent of the ballot. Neither candidate gained the 50% needed to win outright in the first round.

Mr. Komorowski said the election result was "a serious warning for the authorities in power''. He hopes to win a second term in office but his poor result clearly reflects growing dissatisfaction with the way the country is ruled by Civic Platform, which has been in power since 2007.
The strong showing in the presidential race for Pawel Kukiz, a rock star with an anti-establishment message, was another sign that Poles are disappointed. Kukiz managed to gather 20.3 percent, much higher than he was polling in the end of last week.
The final outcome will heavily depend on where those votes go in the second round, on May 24th.
