EU foreign ministers will meet to discuss worsening situation in east Ukraine. EU's foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini has reported that the EU Council will hold an emergency meeting on east Ukraine on 29 January.

EU foreign ministers will meet to discuss the situation in east Ukraine following the deadly shelling of the Ukrainian port city of Mariupol, which killed 30 civilians and left nearly a hundred wounded. Fighting has erupted along the front lines of the east Ukrainian conflict zone after Russian-backed militants announced a new winter offensive with the aim of forcing Ukrainian troops out of the Donetsk region.

Ukrainian and international officials including the EU and OSCE have accused militants of responsibility for the deadly attack on Mariupol and called on Russia to cease its military support for the insurgency.
