Eurovision News Events

Tunis, Tunisia - 26 October 2014 Three years after its first free elections, Tunisia will hold a parliamentary vote on Sunday 26 October after the adoption of the new constitution last January. Ennahda and its rival party Call for Tunisia, are expected to win the largest number of seats. Ennahda headed a coalition after the overthrow of autocrat Zine El Abidine Ben Ali in 2011, until it resigned in favor of a cabinet of technocrats earlier this year to bring an end to months of political crisis sparked by the assassination of two opposition leaders by radical Islamists. Opposition parties say its dominance of the last government almost derailed Tunisia's transition to democracy. Consequently, Ennahda stated that it will not compete in November’s presidential election. Since its 2011 uprising, the North African state has advanced toward a democracy seen as a model for the region. However, broader reforms are still needed. The future legislative assembly will play a crucial role in consolidating the gains of the transition by modifying the laws to harmonize them with the new constitution. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS I AP 360

Tunisia goes to the polls on 26 October for legislative elections and again on 23 November for a presidential election. As the birthplace of the Arab Spring pro-democracy demonstrations that swept the region, voting in Tunisia is being closely watched. Tunisia overthrew its secular dictator in 2011 and is in the midst of a democratic transition, which has seen the rise of extremist Islamic groups. The banned Ansar al-Shariah group is linked to al-Qaida and is believed to be behind the assassination of two politicians last year and the deaths of dozens of soldiers.
