Kiev, Ukraine, 25-28 October 2014

Early parliamentary (Verkhovna Rada) elections will be held in Ukraine on 26 October 2014.

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko announced the elections, which would ordinarily not take place until 2017, on 25 August, in a move that the President said was "in line with the expectations of the vast majority of the citizens of Ukraine", adding that it would be a step toward "cleansing" the parliament.

The elections are overshadowed by ongoing trouble in Ukraine's war-torn Donbass region, where pro-Russian rebels have been fighting Ukrainian army forces for months. In addition, citizens in Crimea, which was annexed by Russia after a spurious referendum in March 2014, will not be able to vote.
