10th ASEM Summit
The Summit is an inter-regional forum for dialogue and cooperation and takes place every two years. It brings together the 27 European Union member states, two other European countries and the EU Commission with 20 Asian countries and the secretariat for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). The main components of the dialogue process are divided into three so-called pillars, the political pillar, the economic pillar and the social, cultural and educational pillar.

Milan, Italy, 16-17 October 2014
Russian President Vladimir Putin is expected to meet with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Francois Hollande at the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) in Milan on October 16-17. The leaders of Ukraine and Russia are expected to discuss eastern Ukraine’s fragile ceasefire and gas supplies for winter.
It will be the first opportunity for Putin to meet with top European leaders since D-Day celebrations in Normandy back in June. Herman Van Rompuy, President of the European Council, will chair the summit hosted by the Government of Italy. Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) was created in 1996 as a forum for dialogue and cooperation between Europe and Asia. Every two years, ASEM Heads of State and Government meet at a summit to set ASEM's priorities. These Summits are held alternatively in Asia and Europe.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has confirmed that he will attend an Asia-Europe (ASEM) summit in Italy next month in what will be his first encounter with Western leaders since the Ukraine crisis deepened dramatically this summer.
Italy expects ASEM to be attended by German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who normally takes a lead in western contacts with Putin, British Prime Minister David Cameron and Chinese Prime Minister Li Keqiang, among others.
