A fierce battle continues for control of the strategic Syrian-Kurdish town of Kobani, as U.S.-led airstrikes attempt to halt the onslaught of Islamic State militants.

Kurdish officials warn the airborne military action may have failed to turn the tide against the extremists, as Syria's civil war approaches Turkey's border.

The fighting has forced at least 200,000 residents from the area to flee across the nearby frontier into Turkish territory.
