A crucial review of Greece's bailout by its foreign lenders will begin with talks in Paris after Athens argued that lengthy audits in the Greek capital hurt the country's morale.

The decision to host the initial meetings outside Greece is a surprise concession to Greece's government, which faces strong public pressure each time bailout inspectors from the European Union and International Monetary Fund arrive in Athens and demand progress on unpopular reforms and austerity cuts.

Unions often use the visits by the so-called "troika" officials to stage angry protests, which in the past have led to riots in Athens' centre and retailers have complained of a slump in sales as the national mood sours.

A senior Greek government official said the Paris talks would focus on the country's budgetary and financing gaps, and expressed hope that such meetings abroad would become a normal occurrence.
