30-31.08.2014 / Gdansk, Poland The European Solidarity Center is due to open on August 30, 2014 by the President of Poland Bronislaw Komorowski.

The ESC is to preserve the heritage and ideas of the Polish Solidarity movement, which was founded in 1980 during a strike at Gdansk Shipyard and went on to contribute, a decade later, to the fall of Communism in Central and Eastern Europe.

The 5-storey building which has been designed to give the impression of walls cracking and tilting and is covered in rust-colored sheet metal reminiscent of a ship’s hull. It has been located within the area of the former Gdansk Shipyard. The center will be composed of two wings with a viewing terrace on top. It will host events, seminars, conferences and readings, supporting research and exploring the notions of freedom, justice and solidarity.

Among special guests participating in the opening ceremonies are: Chris Niedenthal, Shana Penn, Ivan Krastev and more.
