Abuja, Nigeria, 26-29 March 2015

Nigeria's Electoral Commission has chosen 28 March 2015 as the new date for Presidential Elections

Incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan faces the opposition leader Muhammadu Buhari, a former military dictator.

The elections scheduled for last February 14 were postponed at the last hour to 28 March. The Independent Electoral Commission was quoted as saying the armed forces needed to concentrate on military operations meant to defeat the dreaded Islamist Boko Haram group within six weeks. It is true the reported 1.5 million people displaced by the violence over the last 6 years would probably not have been able to vote, but this has not changed.

Although the government of Nigeria described Boko Haram fighters' recent pledge of allegiance to the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) as a sign of weakness in the face of growing military pressure from Nigeria and its allies, the militants’ deadly attacks continue on an almost daily basis now striking not only the North East of the country but also in neighboring Chad, whose army is already heavily involved in the battle against the Northern Nigerian rebels.

Nigeria is the continent’s biggest economy and most populous country. Instability in Nigeria could have dire economic impacts for the region. Similarly, a mismanaged election could trigger post-election violence that will exacerbatethe refugee crisis both internally and at the regional level.
