Rome, Italy, 19 October 2014

Pope Francis will hold a Mass in St Peter’s Basilica to close the III Extraordinary Synod of Bishops on the family and beatify Pope Paul VI on the 19th of October.

The beatification Mass will take place at the end of the two-week Synod of Bishops on the Family called to examine the "Pastoral Challenges to the Family in the Context Of Evangelization". The last two Extraordinary General Assemblies were held in 1969 and 1985.

Born Giovanni Battista Montini in 1897, Pope Paul VI reigned from 1963-1978 and was the first pope in the modern area to travel abroad. Paul VI’s 1968 encyclical, Humanae Vitae, re-affirmed rejection of most forms of birth control as part of Catholic Church teaching on married love and procreation. Paul VI presided over the final sessions of the II Vatican council, overseeing the promulgation of the council’s documents and reforms.

Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI may take part in Paul VI’s beatification Mass, Vatican spokesman Father Federico Lombardi said last week during a press conference. Since his resignation, the pope emeritus has been living largely away from public view in the Vatican, although he attended the Mass for the canonizations of John XXIII and John Paul II last April.
