Eurovision News Events

Istanbul, Turkey - 10 August 2014

Turkey will hold its first direct presidential election on 10 August.

After dominating Turkish politics for more than a decade, current Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan is running for President. His main rivals are Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, joint candidate of the two main opposition parties in parliament, the centre-left Republican People's Party (CHP), and the far-right Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), and pro-Kurdish People's Democracy Party (HDP) young presidential candidate Selahattin Demirtas.

Many Turks credit Mr Erdogan for the country’s rapidly growing economic prosperity. His victory would concentrate more power in the hands of a man who has divided Turkish society along secular-religious lines and worried Turkey's western allies. His government's tough handling of the 2013 protests, in which nine people died, drew international condemnation.

The winner must get more than 50% of the vote. If no candidate reaches this mark in the first round, a run-off will be held on 24 August.

Eurovision Special Events will offer the following facilities in Istanbul:

Standup position for Live programme inserts
Playout (multi-format)
Connectivity to the Eurovision Global Network

TURKEY, 10 AUGUST 2014

TAKSIM SQUARE, ISTANBUL ►
ISTANBUL STUDIO ►
GRAND NATIONAL ASSEMBLY, ANKARA ►

Turks will vote directly for their president for the first time in a landmark election to be held on 10 August.

The poll will determine whether incumbent Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the candidate of the ruling Justice and Development Party, remains at Turkey's helm for at least five more years.

Erdogan has presided over Turkey's economic ascent, but has also provoked outrage for his increasingly authoritarian style. He favours expanding the largely symbolic post of president to give it greater powers.

Other presidential contenders include former OIC head Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, being jointly fielded by two opposition parties, and pro-Kurdish Peoples' Democratic Party leader Selahattin Demirtas.

If none of the candidates receives more than 50 percent of votes cast, a second round will be held on 24 August.
