At the invitation of President Herman Van Rompuy, the June European Council will open with a commemoration of the outbreak of the First World War. This two-day meeting, held on the eve of the anniversary of the Sarajevo incident of
28 June 1914, will begin in Ypres on Thursday 26 June 2014 with a ceremony at the Ménin Gate starting around 17.00, followed by a dinner of the Heads of State or Government in the City Hall.

The European Council meeting will resume its usual programme in Brussels on Friday 27 June.

Ypres, Belgium, 26 June 2014

European Union leaders will open their June summit in the Belgian city of Ypres to commemorate the Centenary of the start of the First World War.

The heads of government will gather on June 26th 2014, two days before the 100th anniversary of Archduke Franz Ferdinand's assassination in Sarajevo.

EU leaders will start their summit with a ceremony at the Menin Gate, the memorial bearing the names of more than 54,000 soldiers from Australia, Canada, India, South Africa and the UK who have no known grave.

A dinner of Heads of State and Gouvernement in the famous Cloth hall will follow the Menin Gate's Ceremony.

European Union leaders usually hold their regular twice-yearly meetings at the headquarters of the EU in Brussels. They will return to the Belgian capital for the second day of the summit

On Thursday 26th June 2014, EU leaders will attend a ceremony in the Belgium city of Ypres to mark the centenary of the outbreak of World War I. During the war, hundreds of thousands of soldiers and civilians from all over the world lost their lives in the wide, open flatlands around the Belgian town of Ypres.
