Brussels, Belgium, 22-25 May 2014

400 million Europeans are eligible to cast their ballot in the world's second largest democratic excercise. Elections to the European Parliament will be held in all member states of the European Union (EU) between 22 and 25 May 2014.

Europeans will vote for 751 MEPs (Members of the European Parliament) who will in turn select the next President of the European Commission - the EU's executive. Changes since 2009, affecting the powers of the European Parliament mean that voters will now have a larger say in the direction of the Union.

The elections in May 2014 will be the eighth Europe-wide ballot to the European Parliament since the first direct elections in 1979. The European Parliament is the only directly elected EU institution.

Elections to the European Parliament will take place over the period 22 to 25 May 2014 in all 28 member states of the European Union.

The poll, which takes place once every five years, will be the first to be held since major financial turmoil hit the EU. The crisis forced several eurozone governments to seek international bailouts and caused governments to fall. Ongoing economic woes and a proliferation of extremist and anti-European parties are likely to be key factors influencing voter turnout and the election results.
