On September 1st , 2014 Poland will commemorate the 75th anniversary of the beginning of the Second World War, by paying a tribute to the military and civilian casualties. Celebrations with participation of Polish officials and war veterans will be held in Warsaw and other Polish cities.
President of Germany Joachim Gauck will take part in the ceremonies commemorating the 75th anniversary of the outbreak of World War II along with his Polish counterpart Bronislaw Komorowski. The main ceremonies will be held in Gdansk on September 1st.
Official programme of the commemorations:
15:00 GMT – Lightning candles by both presidents at the cemetery on Westerplatte
15:10 GMT – beginning of the main ceremonies – possible statements of both presidents on Westerplatte
16:00 GMT - laying wreath at the Monument to the Defenders of Westerplatte
16:20 GMT – both presidents to take part in the debate with the youth from Poland and Germany

Westerplatte, Poland, 01 September 2014
Ceremonies to mark the 75th anniversary of the start of World War II will be held on Monday September 1st in the Polish peninsula town of Westerplatte.
The decision by Nazi Germany to invade Poland on 1st september 1939 led to Britain and France declaring war against Germany two days later.
German battleship the Schleswig-Holstein opened fire on Westerplatte at point blank range, coinciding with the German Wehrmacht's invasion of Poland from the West, East and South.
