THE ASSOCIATED PRESS I AP 360

NEWPORT, UK, 04-05 SEPTEMBER 2014

The NATO Summit for Heads of State and Government, hosted by British Prime Minister David Cameron, takes place in Newport, Wales, on 4 and 5 September 2014.

The summit comes amid strained relations between NATO and Russia, following the annexation of Crimea. After the downing of Malaysian Airlines Flight 17, pressure has grown on Russia to rein in separatists fighting in eastern Ukraine.

On his facebook page, Cameron said, "Britain will host a Nato summit in Wales at which the relationship with Russia will again take centre stage. It is up to Russia which path that relationship now takes."

NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen has said the summit is an "important opportunity" for the organisation as it marks the conclusion, at the end of 2014, of its ISAF mission in Afghanistan, and a new phase of engagement in the country.
