Eurovision News Events

Edinburgh, United Kingdom, 18 September 2014

On 18 September, Voters will be asked to respond to the question: "Should Scotland be an independent country?"

British Conservative leader David Cameron, Labour leader Ed Miliband and Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg have signed a pledge to devolve more powers in the event of a No vote in the referendum.

Supporters of an independent Scotland had taken a narrow lead in the referendum debate for the first time. A recent YouGov poll suggested that - of those who had made up their mind - 51% would vote to leave the UK, compared to 49% who would vote not to.

For more than 300 years, since the Treaty of Union in 1707, Scotland has been part of the United Kingdom. The Scottish National Party (SNP) has fought since it was founded in the 1930s to recover Scotland's status as a sovereign nation, which it had enjoyed for several centuries before the merger with England and Wales. The SNP, led by Alex Salmond, is the ruling party in the Scottish Parliament, created in 1998 as part of the push for greater Scottish autonomy within the UK.

Since agreement to the referendum by the Westminster Parliament in August 2013, political debate has focused on strongly contested constitutional and financial issues such as the status of Scotland within the EU, what currency an independent Scotland would use and whether it would have a viable economy. Opposition to Scotland leaving the UK has been led by the "Better Together" campaign, supported by the pro-union parties in Scotland and Westminster. They are opposed by "Yes Scotland", comprising the SNP and aligned political groups and personalities in Scotland.

Voting will take place between 0700-2200 BST on September 18. The results from each constituency will be announced throughout the night at the Royal Highland Centre at Ingliston near Edinburgh Airport, with the overall outcome expected early on September 19th.

Access will be granted to the media centre at the Lowland Hall. Access to the Highland Hall is limited while the Edinburgh vote count is taking place and passes will be allocated for this area when the final numbers allowed are confirmed from a health and safety point of view.
