19.08.2012South Africa: Striking miners' shooting *** ARCHIVE
Eurovision
Marikana, South Africa - August, 17
Police in South Africa fired on striking miners, killing at least 30 of them in a Lonmin-owned platinum mine of Marikana on Thursday August, 16.
Heavily armed officers shot into a charging crowd of workers who walked off their job last Friday, demanding higher wages. Violence had already killed 10 people since the beginning of the strike.
Thursday's shootings are one of the worst in South Africa since the end of apartheid 18 years ago, and are seen as deepening the rift between the country's governing African National Congress and an impoverished electorate confronting rampant unemployment and strong economic inequalities.
